Wonder Woman Update

Earlier this week I got a bit more work done on my alternative Wonder Woman Costume. I decided to go with the scraps of red and white polka dot fabric I had, and make a short summery top with a shirred back that I would get more wear out of after wonder woman. I used a pattern I had previously drafted (for the bodice of my wedding dress) and added extra fabric at the back for the shirring.
Trying to fit all the pieces I needed on the scraps

Extra fabric on the back piece

Narrow hemming the back piece

pressing open the seams

Top stitching the seams
The front pieces all topstiched and hemmed

The start of the Shirring

I have never shirred before, but after seeing it done on an episode of the Great British Sewing Bee, and having a bit of a google, I thought it was something I could handle, so I had a go. Now I wouldn't say it was perfect, and I usually prefer a tighter firmer fit on my tops, so I'm not sure I'll do it a lot, but I can add it to my Sewing repertoire . But all I can say is, if you are going to try, make sure you have enough shirring elastic. I just had a little gutterman one, and didn't realise it was only 10m! Luckily, I had just enough, but if you were to shirr a larger area, you would definitely need multiple spools (or a large one, but i didn't see any bigger ones at spotlight)

My original plans for the accessories... this changed a bit to make sure I could fit all the pieces on my fabric scraps

Roughly what the costume will look like

the belt pieces cut out

Zigzagging the edges, that gold stuff frays like you wouldnt believe!

All the accessory peices ready for hemming

The costume so far with the belt and headband pinned together.

Hemming the belt edge, whilst wearing the cuffs.
I luckily had some scraps of gold fabric from a christmas tree skirt I made last year. I had just enough for a belt, crown and cuffs. I sketched them out, cut, zigzagged, and hemmed. Then I added about 4-5 inches of wide elastic to the back of the crown piece, and 2 short pieces of elastic between 1 side of the front and back pieces of the belt. I then hand sewed snap fasteners to the other side of the belt, and to the cuffs, and the  costume was done!

It was a hit at church, with all the kids recognising who I was supposed to be (and most of the adults...) bonus, I was the only wonder woman!

We were so busy, I forgot to get a photo of the complete costume all together, so I will have to post one a bit later, as right now, im outside helping my husband (who is on the roof) put up christmas lights, ready for December.

    1. Thanks Jen! I totally lucked out with having those gold remnants in my stash, otherwise I don't think I would have been able to pull it off so well. Bit bummed I never got a photo of the whole outfit together though.
